Greetings from a misty Glendale, California!

This here is the first update on our fledgling media organization.

From the outset of our quest, we promised ourselves to build EXO out in the open. It just felt like the web3 thing to do. Our hopes in committing to transparency are a few-fold: 

1. Strengthen ties with our network here; 

2. Provide fresh perspective for other builders; 

3. Most importantly, kick a feedback loop into action where anyone can get involved. Just hit the comments/reply and bring it. 

Ultimately, EXO aims to pioneer new models of coordination in the storytelling space. This is the tale of that.

🌱 Web3 Is In Our Nature I + II

In September, I travelled to Denver for MCON, a 3-day summit focused entirely on Decentralized Autonomous Organizations. The energy around emerging organizational systems felt revolutionary. The collection of minds in attendance was humbling. Despite the diversity of backgrounds, everyone shared a similar disposition: disillusionment with traditional corporate structures, and a profound belief in DAO frameworks. I met folks who had left high-profile positions in banking, HR and record labels vowing never to return to an office. DAOs gave them hope that there might be another way to do what they love. It was fascinating hearing voices on stage working to explain at-times abstract future Internet paradigms. Metaphors abound! Drawing parallels between emergent behavior in nature and web3’s decentralized protocols seemed to be a popular approach to demystification.

With that I decided to try my hand at a web3 explanation/sustained metaphor of sorts. Part I here details my transition from the corporate world to web3. It includes some amazing quotes from MCON and an interview with Kevin Owocki, the founder of Gitcoin. Part II explores decentralization in the wild!

💼 Incorporation

I am psyched to announce that with the help of the excellent folks at Cooley, EXO is incorporated as EXO Unlimited, Inc. We’ve got ourselves a Certificate of Incorporation, Bylaws, Indemnification Agreements, an EIN...we’re dialed!

With our heads in the legal space, we’ve been thinking a lot about how a C Corp and DAO can form a symbiotic relationship. One of the more helpful perspectives shared last week is this widely-circulated white paper from David Kerr (Principal, Cowrie LLC) and Miles Jennings (General Counsel, Crypto, Andreessen Horowitz).

We snagged the URL EXO.quest a few months ago, just to have a place to park a vanity page. Questing is important to us and all, but a bit of a fingerful. So we've been looking at alternatives. Let me tell you, EXO domains do not come cheap! Last night though, we got our hands on EXO.xyz. Succinct! We'll be launching here. 

🚀 Launch Date!

We have an avowed lift-off on the calendar - 02/22/2022. We'll be launching at ETHDenver. We're in talks with our old friends at Death & Co about hosting an evening of revelry at their elevated location. 

👀 Help Us Decide on the EXO Logo

We're working with an extraordinary designer on our logo. We thought it would be a fun time to share some very early iterations. These are less final and more exploratory. But we want all the perspective. If you have an opinion, we'd love to hear it. You can view the first round here. 

🛠️ Operations partner: Opolis

We’ve onboarded Opolis to help with payroll and compliance considerations. They are an extraordinary organization helmed by John Paller that are helping so many DAOs stay focused on innovation. Check them out.

⚔️ Build Partner: Raid Guild

We have partnered with Raid Guild to build EXO. They are a decentralized collective of mercenaries ready to slay your web3 product demons. Working with a decentralized group is a whole different thing from your average web dev agency experience. It's refreshing and meritocratic and very human. You either vibe or you don't. We vibe. Together we'll be working on a range of projects, including but not limited to: DAO structure, smart contracts, tokenomics, front-end, Discord architecture and community management. 

🙌 Discord Community Manager

One of the most precious resources in the web3 space are Discord Community Managers. We keep on saying - the first person to create a talent agency for CMs is going to crush. Thanks to the folks at Raid Guild, we found one post-haste. He's the EXO Guide in our Discord and is online and awake 24 hours a day (no one knows how). Hit him with a gm!

We've been keeping pretty quiet on Discord. In the next few weeks, we'll be doing some evergreen activities, including an evening radio show - 6PST/9EST in the 💿⚡Frequencies⚡💿 Channel.
